Tips and Advice for Your Senior, Family, or Engagement Session

Ok, so your session is coming up. We have nailed down the location, and time, filled out the questionnaire, and talked about poses & style. Now there is one more detail to lock in. Outfits!
What are you going to wear? What is your family going to wear?
If you are unsure, that’s ok. It is very common for clients to not know what to wear for their session. You must be thinking “These photos must be perfect!”
I get it! You have invested your time and money and you want your images to be beautiful. These images are important to you and I want you to have images you can show off and be proud of.
To help, I have put together this photography style guide to help you find the perfect outfit. These are general tips that can be applied to any type of session. The point is to help you find an outfit you will feel confident in and help you look your best for your session.

Solid Colors
I recommend solid colors for any session. They put more focus on the most important part of the session… YOU. Solid colors also make it easier for me to edit out distracting things like stray hairs, and wrinkles, or smooth if needed. I know that may seem selfish, but trust me you will appreciate my attention to detail.
When choosing colors, try some that complement each other. Reds pair well with greens, blues with peach tones, or browns with blacks. Also, keep in mind what season you are in and your location. More on that later.

Think Textures, Not Patterns
Stripes, plaid, and paisley patterns can be distracting. Sometimes patterns can be distorted by the camera. And on the opposite side of solid colors, patterns can make it challenging to edit images.
Avoid patterns but go for textures. Pair a plain white T, for example, with a jean jacket or a ruffled scarf or shawl. You can also choose a chiffon blouse or a lacy dress. Textures are a great way to add a little pop, interest, and depth to a photo.

Dress Comfortably & Confidently
Two of the most important tips is to dress in an outfit you feel comfortable and confident in. Nothing is worse than wearing clothing that is too tight, that you have to constantly adjust, or that accentuates something you don’t want to draw attention to.
Dressing comfortably also means dressing for the weather. This means light breathable clothing in the summer and sweaters and jackets in the winter. Pretty straightforward stuff.
Confidence pairs well with comfort. Wearing an outfit that you are comfortable in usually means you will feel confident. If you don’t feel like you could walk down the runway in your outfit, then don’t wear it.
Lack of comfort and confidence can show through in your images and I want you to look and feel your best. Take your time and find the right outfit for your session. If you need help, I am always available to help you find the perfect look!

Dress for the Location & Occasion
Keep both of these in mind when looking for your outfit. No hard or fast rules here. It really depends on the look you are going for. If your senior session is taking place downtown, you can dress up to the nines. However, you can also dress in more casual clothing as well.
Does your location have a lot of trees and green vegetation? You can dress up or dress down. Again, it all depends on your desired look for your images.
Try to avoid wearing colors that match your scenery so you don’t get lost in the background. I would advise wearing colors that will compliment the background or stand out. You are the subject and you should be the center of attention.
Bonus Jonas
Bring a second outfit! Depending on what package you booked with me, you will have time to change into a second outfit. I always recommend a casual outfit and a dressy outfit. That way you get the best of both worlds and plenty of photos to share.
You may be thinking this is a lot to think about or that I am overthinking this outfit thing. You may be right, I do tend to overthink things. I know when I was looking for outfits for my engagement session, I would have appreciated a guide like this to help me pick out the perfect outfits for me and my husband.
Now as a photographer, I want to make sure you get all the help you need to make your images as beautiful and timeless as you expect them to be.
If you remember one thing from this blog is that I want you to be comfortable and feel confident in your outfit. Those two things will help make your images authentic and genuine as well as make your session experience fun and enjoyable.
